I’ve read this book so many times and this is the first time I noticed what is going on. I believe Kutuzov and the priest’s wife were up to something because he throws some money on the table and then, grinning, the two enter his room together alone at which point Kutuzov’s assistant asks Prince Andrei to please go somewhere with him for a bit. It’s definitely not explicit, but I think it’s what is implied. I could be wrong. The bread and salt euphemism is new to me though. I think that supports the position.
