I recently finished my reading too. Here are some quick thoughts on what was probably my fifth or sixth reading of it.
- If The Iliad is brawn, The Odyssey is brains. In The Iliad battles are won through brute strength and overwhelming power. But in The Odyssey it takes smarts to win the day. Penelope and her loom ruse and Odysseus’ escape from the Cyclops cave come to mind first.
- Recklessness is the major theme for me this time. But I probably think so because that’s what I was reading for this time through. The most common form of recklessness is going against the Gods. There’s also the recklessness of temptation which you cover.
- Narrative. I forgot how much of the poem is people telling stories. I loved it. I might make this a yearly read. Though I’ve already got Ulysses, The Great Gatsby, and War and Peace each year. Why not add Homer?
