I’ve read War and Peace many times now and with each reading I see more and more how, in my opinion at least, the characters who live contentedly by the novel’s end, especially in comparison to how they began the book, seem to have adopted some sort of stoic philosophy to help them negotiate the bleak landscape Tolstoy sets up for them.
While not every daily meditation in A Year of War and Peace will be from the school of stoicism, I think that most of them will.
